What is your running background?

Started running aged 39 when the middle age spread came on. No running prior so I started with walk / run around the local park and progressed from there. Found a passion for big city marathons and going long.


When did you first start running Ultra marathons and why?

My first ultra was the Classic Quarter in Cornwall in 2008. I wanted to challenge myself against longer distances


When or where (at which events) are we most likely to see you?

At the GUCR or KACR – great races, great atmosphere, great people


What are your personal key running achievements to date?

  • London Marathon PB 2:42:26
  • Abbott World Marathon Series 6 Star Finisher.       Average race time 2:50:10
  • Comrades Marathon 2010 Silver Medal 7:25:18
  • UTMB 33:39:21
  • Canal Slam 2017, 4th Place


What was your hardest race experience?

The Rovaniemi 150 this year. Self-supported race in the Arctic Circle in temperatures that fell below -30c. I got my nutrition wrong and the snowshoes took the skin off both my heels so I dropped at 82km. I’ll be back to finish in 2019!


What events do you have planned for 2018 up to Spartathlon? (Dates/name of key events)

GUCR, Henley 24 hour, KACR & regular marathons


What is your typical race strategy for an ultra?

Start steady and try and run an even pace. Don’t dawdle at checkpoints.


What does a typical training week look like?

80 – 100 miles. Mixed sessions; long run, intervals, hills. I also pool run about 4 times a week


What one tip would you pass onto people running an Ultra marathon for the first time?

Start slow, don’t be afraid to walk the hills, be quick in checkpoints – standing time adds up!


Can you tell us one interesting fact about yourself?

I’m a guide runner and I’m looking for a visually impaired runner who wants to take on an Ultra. I haven’t found a volunteer yet.

How did you get on? (Date/result)

My qualifier was the GUCR 2017 31:34 and I was lucky in the ballot. I wasn’t as lucky in 2016


What are you looking forward to at the Spartathlon race?

Reaching Leonidis, the atmosphere, team camaraderie, and sun


What are you not looking forward to during the Spartathlon race?

What’s not to look forward to?


How will you prepare specifically for the Spartathlon race?

Long road miles and somehow training for the heat


Will you be bringing any support crew to the race? (If so, please introduce them briefly)

Yes, my partner Julie Bowler and my club coach and friend Mike Hickman.
