Runners Questions

 What is your running background?

I started running to try and keep fit and take care of my mental health. I soon became hooked on the community around me and enjoyed the challenge of pushing myself to my limits.

When did you first start running Ultra marathons and why?

I did my first ultra in 2014 as I got talked into it when joining a new club. I must have enjoyed it as I entered another one straight away.

When or where (at which events) are we most likely to see you?

I used to do a lot of White Star events and have done a few of the Centurion 100s. Lately I tend to enjoy getting out and enjoy trails and beaches without racing against 100s of runners.

What are your personal key running achievements to date?

Completing the Bob Graham Round.

Qualifying for Spartathlon (of course)

What was your hardest race experience?

I took a fall at North Downs Way 100 in 2018 and struggled on through the pain. At the finish I was taken straight to A&E only to find out I’d ran/hobbled the last 70miles on a broken ankle.

What is your typical race strategy for an ultra?

Steady pace. Refuel little and often. Don’t dilly dally at CPs. Push on through night when temperatures are lower.

What does a typical training week look like?

Run 6 days a week (less on approach to race). 60-100 miles per week. Cycling and sea swimming when I can. Lots of walking and some strength training on top.

What one tip would you pass onto people running an Ultra marathon for the first time?

Enjoy it!

Can you tell us one interesting fact about yourself?

Nope.

What are you not looking forward to during the Spartathlon race?

How will you prepare specifically for the Spartathlon race?

Running in a sweat suit to get used to the heat.

Will you be bringing any support crew to the race? (If so, please introduce them briefly)

Sheela Hobden is my partner and has supported me on many ultras.

Ian Baynes is a friend and has supported me in the past.
