Runners Questions

What is your running background?

I ran for a club when I was very young then took 20 years off before restarting about 10 years ago.

When did you first start running Ultra marathons and why?

Around the time of my first marathon I read “Ultra marathon man” and said to my wife “I’m going to run Western states” and started with the Doyen of the downs in 2008. My quest for Western states is still ongoing. Can’t get past the lottery!

When or where (at which events) are we most likely to see you?

Very diversely I love the mountains but I also love long flat ultras. So you might see me at one of the MCN races or something on the Thames path.

What are your personal key running achievements to date?

I’ve got a sub 18 hundred mile pb which still stuns me that I achieved it.

What was your hardest race experience?

UTMB! That is a tough race. I totally went to pieces and had a rubbish finish time but loved it. UTMB and I have unfinished business.

What events do you have planned for 2015 up to Spartathlon?

My three key races for 2015 are Thames path 100 in May, which I believe is my best shot at a pb. Dragons Back in June and of course Spartathlon.

What is your typical race strategy for an ultra?

Start fast and hope I can hang on. Sometimes it works, mostly it doesn’t.

What does a typical training week look like?

My job is extremely physical which has an impact on my training. A good week for me would consist of a tempo run, a hill session, a long hilly run and 2 other runs dependant on tiredness they could be anything from flat 4 milers or hilly 10 milers.

What one tip would you pass onto people running an Ultra marathon for the first time?

Don’t listen to too many tips! Seriously ask a group of 10 experienced runners a question you’ll get 10 different answers. We all think we know it all! Get out there experiment and learn your own lessons.

Can you tell us one interesting fact about yourself?

I own a pug that loves to run, she can only manage 4 mile max but she absolutely loves it.

Spartathlon Questions

Have you taken part in the Spartathlon before?

No

What are you looking forward to at the Spartathlon race?

The whole experience but I do love finishing a big race when there’s a crowd cheering you in.

What are you not looking forward to during the Spartathlon race?

The possibility of battling with the cut off times.

How will you prepare specifically for the Spartathlon race?

Undecided at the moment because the Dragons back has taken over my life at the moment.

Will you be bringing any support crew to the race?

Jacque my wife will certainly be crewing for me.
